How to Use the Notepad Program

 Notepad is a very simple program for editing text, proposed as an application included in the Windows operating systems. It is great for writing short documents that you want to save in a normal text format. The program also has some very useful features. However, Notepad is a text editor, so images are not compatible. The application is basically identical on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, so the only real difference is how the program opens. Learning the basics of Notepad is quick and easy!

Start with Notepad Notepad Step 1 Open the program. On Windows 7, open the Start Menu and type "Notepad" in the search box. Select Notepad to open the application. You can also go to the "Accessories" folder in the Start Menu, and select Notepad from the application list In Windows 8.1, type "Notepad" in the Start screen search box.

Explore the application user interface. Once you open the program, you will see a simple screen with a limited set of options for typing text. Note the options for the File, Edit, Format, View, and Help menus.

Notepad Step 3 Open the File Menu. A drop-down menu with New, Open, Save, Save as, Page setup and Print will be displayed. These are the basic functions for text editing. Select "New" to create a document. Whenever you save a file with Save or Save As, Windows will automatically give it the .txt extension, which will allow you to open it with Notepad.

You can save documents in HTML by choosing Save As and selecting All Files in the list of choices, then save the file with the .htm or .html extension. Type the HTML code directly into the document as you would plain text.

To be able to save a document in HTML you need to enable the Auto Wrap function. You will find instructions on how to enable it a little later.

Notepad Step 4

Set page formatting. Select Page Setup in the File menu. You will see a few simple formatting options. Choose the size, orientation, header, and footer you want using this menu. Add a header and footer. Notepad includes a default header, which includes the name of the document and the date it was printed. The default text for the footer is the page number itself. You can remove these defaults by selecting the Header and Footer option in the File menu on the menu bar and deleting the codes inside. All header and footer settings must be entered manually each time you want to print a document. These settings cannot be saved. To change them, choose Page Setup from the File menu and enter the desired commands for the header and footer in the text boxes. The following is a shortlist of header and footer commands[2] :

If you leave the boxes for the header or footer blank, the document will be printed without a header and footer. You can enter words in the boxes for the header and footer and these will be printed in their relative position. It is not necessary to capitalize the letters after the "&" sign. In Notepad, the header is centered, regardless of the formatting codes you use if those are not the first items listed in the header box. For example, to align a title on the left side of the page, use & title. Use Notepad Notepad Step 5 Get familiar with the "Edit" tab in the menu bar. Undo is the first item you find in the Edit drop-down menu. You can also use hotkeys for this function by typing Ctrl + Z on the keyboard. Once you use Undo you will find the Rerun option in its place. The remaining functions in the menu - Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Find, Find Next, Replace, Go To, Select All, and Date / Time - are the standard ones found in almost all Windows text management programs. The "Go-To" option is available only if the "Word Wrap" option is turned off and the document contains numbered lines. Notepad's default settings for "Word Wrap" are disabled.

Notepad Step 6 Enable "Word wrap". Unless the option for this function is activated, all characters typed will be on the same line until you press the Enter key, and the line with all the text will scroll without stopping. To fix this, open the next drop-down menu on the menu bar; Word wrap is the first option you find. Just select it and the document will be edited accordingly.

Notepad Step 7 Change the font. Select Font in the Format item on the menu bar. You have the option to choose from a set of preloaded fonts, plus options for Bold, Italic, or Bold Italic. Also, in this window, you can select the font size. Changing the font affects the entire document. You cannot use one font on one part of the document and another type on another part. In the drop-down menu item listed as "Writing" in the Font window, you may find fonts not available among the standard "Western" style types.

Use the "View" drop-down option in the menu bar. The only option you find is called "Status Bar". This option is available only when "Word Wrap" is turned off. In this case, a notification line at the bottom edge of the document window will indicate where the cursor is in the document.

Start typing. It is advisable to enable "Word wrap". Change the font as you wish and remember that it will be applied to the text throughout the document. Note that the "Tab" key will move the cursor ten spaces along the line of text, unlike Microsoft Word, where the shift is five spaces.

Notepad Step 10 Save the document. Once done, select the "Save As" option in the File drop-down in the menu bar. Notepad uses the "Documents" folder in Windows 7 and the "OneDrive" folder on Windows 8.1. If you want to save the document in a different folder, simply browse for another folder in the "Save As" window and select it. Notepad will use this choice for future documents. Remember that all files will be saved with the .txt extension.

Print the document when you are done. Click on the File menu and then select the Print option from the drop-down menu. This will take you to a new window where you can choose the printer and options you prefer, then click Print. To change the settings that determine the appearance of the printed document, click the File menu and choose Page Setup: To change the paper size, click on one of the listed sizes. To change the paper source, click on a drawer or feeder listed. To print the file vertically, click on Vertical; to print the file horizontally, click on Horizontal. To change the margins, enter a value in any of the margin boxes. Use Hot Keys Use the "Esc" key. You can use Esc as a quick and easy way to exit any dialog boxes. Basically Esc corresponds to the "Cancel" button. Pressing Esc will also hide the outputs. The Esc key is usually located on one end of the keyboard and is sometimes indicated by a small arrow pointing to the left. Switch to another window. To go to the next window on an Italian keyboard and in almost all versions of Windows, you can use Alt + Tab. Press and hold these keys together to activate the shortcut; this will allow Windows to navigate through open documents. You can hold down the Shift key with Alt + Tab to move through documents in the opposite direction. Activate or deactivate the window containing the document you need. Press the Alt key, then, holding it down, press the Tab key: the system will point to the open windows allowing you to make active and select the one where you release the Alt key.
